“If there’s fun to be had, PHILADANCO will have it. But if there’s deeper purpose, these performers will clarify it, underscore it and make you pay attention.” – Dance Magazine
PHILADANCO! presents “Straight Outta Philly” in collaboration with Rennie Harris Puremovement. In this unique presentation, two of Philadelphia’s greatest dance institutions will meet on stage in a fusion of hip-hop and ballet.
Across the nation and around the world, PHILADANCO is celebrated for its innovation, creativity and preservation of predominantly African-American traditions in dance. Founded by Joan Myers Brown in 1970, the group has a legacy of breaking barriers and building bridges across cultural divides.
In a society where hip-hop is often portrayed as a violent, undisciplined counterculture, RENNIE HARRIS PURE MOVEMENT deconstructs popular perception of this medium, expanding and challenging the boundaries and definitions of hip-hop in general. As hip-hop continues to be chosen as the modern generation’s medium of expression, RHPM works to honor its history, explore its ideas, and further its contributions to the surrounding community.
Harris, a North Philadelphia native, founded RHPM based on the belief that hip-hop is the most important original expression of a new generation, with the unique ability to express universal themes that extend beyond racial, religious, and economic boundaries.
